Nokia & Visa – PayPal, too! April 29, 2006

Recently, Visa and Nokia connected together in Malaysia to launch "the world’s
first" credit card payment system that allows consumers to purchase
goods using their mobile phones.

The Mobile Visa Wave Payment Pilot, which is
another move forward toward the fabled electronic wallet, uses the
Visa Wave smart card technology to send payment information into a
reader.

Just yesterday I got an invitation from PayPal to set up my mobile phone to send/receive payments through their system.  It was very easy to set up in my account.  Once there, it asked if it could verify the information by calling my cellphone.  I accepted the verification option and it immediately called my cell.  I then followed the voice prompts and it led me through security information for future transactions.

Super easy!  I haven’t used it to pay for anything yet but it’s certainly a step toward future payments.  I wonder how many are comfortable enough to use the service.

Aibo gap filled by Korea’s Genibo? April 28, 2006

SEL10704280945I’m not really sure if there was a market "gap" left in the robot dog market, but it looks like the Korean technology company, DasaTech, is picking up where Sony left off by offering a replacement for the shelved Aibo robot dog. No word yet on pricing for Genibo (Genius Robot), but Korea has always done a good job of producing goods at lower cost (sometimes the quality is a little compromised, but sometimes not). Genibo, which stands one foot tall and weighs a little over three pounds, understands 100 commands. Apparently, the robo-pup will be able to sit, roll over, tail wag, and get itself around obstacles. Personally, I’m kind of partial to a dog that comes in pink, doesn’t shed, and has an off switch…but that’s just me. Look for Genibo sometime in 2007.  [AP via NewsVine]

Ghost Detecting Keychain April 28, 2006

Pinkghost I’m sure I’m not the only one who grew up listening to urban legends and ghost stories. I love a good ghost story, and part of me likes that spooky feeling. So if I could get my hands on a portable ghost detector, I’d probably use it to scare my nieces or friends. While I lived in Japan, I remember locals talking about these creepy ghost sites where drivers could see the ghost of a woman through their rear view mirror sitting in their backseat. Or while I live in Austin, there was a popular urban legend about little children’s ghost pushing cars out of harms way if they stalled on the haunted train tracks. I bet this little sucker would come in handy when folks are exchanging ghost stories around the campfire. [ohGizmo]

Mobile iPod DJTuntables April 27, 2006

In the San Francisco area, everyone’s a DJ. I probably have more DJ friends than girl friends. iPodj.jp is taking the iPod DJ experience one step further by  designing a new 4 iPod DJ controller.  That’s right–they scratch, cut, mix and fade sounds like they would on an analog DJ system.  They use the iTrip to transmit sounds to any radio with an FM module. So DJ’s, ditch the crates of vinyls and take your DJ skills literally anywhere you go. Ipodj1

A Parents’ Internet Dream April 26, 2006

Filed under: House Gear — techiedivas @ 5:21 pm

With more and more dangers on the internet, parents need a tool to help protect their children. TWAcomm brings us the Parental Internet Timer. This device gives parents the power to control internet access time for their kids, even if they are not at home. You can set up different schedules for weekdays and weekends and not worry about whether or not the kids are tampering with it. The programming mode is only accessible with a password, and a couple of wrong tries will lock up the device. One other feature that I found interesting was that the jacks were tamper proof, so you cannot even bypass the timer without the password. This is a good tool for those working parents who can’t be at home as much as they would like to be to watch their kids on the internet.
