Gadgets Banned in the Air August 10, 2006
Another
terrorist scare in the UK caused a complete ban of all our favorite gadgets in
carry on luggage. The ban includes laptops, cameras, cell phones and even our
other girly needs like lotions and gels! There was even a case of liquid
eyeliner being confiscated from a passenger trying to board her flight.
Scotland
Yard has announced the arrest of 21 people possibly involved in a planned
terrorist plot. The plot is supposed to involve liquid explosives, to be used
on flights from the UK to the US. The more
creative people get with the design of explosives, the more we can expect
gadgets to be banned from flights. Who would think women would be hit the
hardest though; we can even start taking our mascara and eyeliner out of our
purses and pack it into our checked in luggage. I am flying to Europe in two weeks, so
I am just hoping they will let me keep my two favorite girly things to get
through the flight: my palm pilot and mascara.
Freeing AOL from its shackles August 3, 2006
A snarky commenter posted on DailyTech that AOL is finally being offered for what its worth…NOTHING. The great one has finally bitten the dust, and in a last attempt to salvage what they can AOL has released their portal, messenger, aimphonline, email and social networking for Free.
Despite the fact that the AIM client boasts a membership of some 53 million, with the advent of broadband, the actual AOL portal itself, has suffered massive losses of their customer base due to AOL’s failure to change with the times, and they’re charging customers prices comparable to that of DSL for dial up.
To Pay or Not To Pay Top Diggers August 1, 2006
Netscape released a Digg-like site a few weeks ago, and Diggers haven’t been quite "digging" the new copy-cat site. This week f-secure reports that hackers took matters into their own hands by injecting javascript code into Netscape pages that prompted users to visit Digg, or had funny messages like "Tom Way is the sexiest man alive" (btw, who is Tom Way?).
Meanwhile, the battle between Netscape’s Jason Calacanis and Digg’s Jay Adelson and Kevin Rose begins to heat up. It all started with the launch of the new Netscape site (obviously), but Jason Calacanis took it one step further last week and offered to pay the top12 users on Digg/Reddit/Flickr/Newsvine $1,000 a month for doing what they like to do best–but for Netscape. Calacanis argues that the top 12 users spend 2-3 hours a day searching for stories to dig for free. Now, he wants to offer them $12,000 a year or $5.36/hr to keep them searching for those cool stories, without censoring them in any way. Read Story [Digg]
MSN & Yahoo are 1!!! July 13, 2006
Microsoft and Yahoo announced today that they’re officially unifying both instant messengers, allowing users of both platforms to communicate w/ the other.
Though there are already a plethora of 3rd party multiplatform messengers, this will allow users to use the original manufacturers software, (which has been a pet peeve of mine) and have friends and users from both platforms on one list.
The companies have said the purpose is to have the largest IM community w/ the combination of both clients totaling around 350 million users.
