Musical Rolling Robot October 17, 2006
Introducing, Muiro (which stands for music innovation based on utility robot technology…just rolls off the the tongue, doesn’t it?), the newest offering from ZMP, Inc. Muiro is basically a 14 inch long egg-shaped robot developed with Kenwood that rolls and twists around on your floor playing music wirelessly wherever you happend to be.
Launched in Japan this summer and due for general release later next year, Muiro the musical robot comes equipped with a camera and sensor that the robot uses to receive and respond to the owner’s wireless remote and to avoid bumping into furniture and the like. Apparently, this little super-robo-music-rolly thing also positions itself at the perfect distance for your listening pleasure.
Muiro will retail for around £500, is available in white, black, yellow and red (sorry, no pink), and allows you to attach your iPod or stream music wirelessy from you PC. Obviously, this sleek little gizmo is designed for those with some extra cash and without other organisms competing for floorspace (like small children or playful animals), but it’s still a very cool, if pricey, gadget.

Web Stickies October 12, 2006

I have the memory of a paramecium. If I’ve signed up for a website one day, chances are that I’ve forgotten that all-important login name and password the next. Doesn’t matter if it is a website I visit daily or once a year. At Overstock.com, there are five “Annie-sans” accounts all under me. Thank goodness Firefox has a new extension that allows one to create web-based stickies and place them anywhere on a browser window. Everytime you visit a previously-marked website, the stickies pop up right where you placed them. Best thing? It’s free. Visit MyStickies for more information.
Staying Safe Online September 28, 2006
From the editor’s desk:
Hey there, every once in a while, I like to post articles that I’m writing over at Yahoo
Tech, in case you missed them. This week, I’m on a online safety kick, so I’ve been writing some field guides for ya on phishing, phone privacy, MySpace tips, and other tech tips to keep you safe while you surf the web. You’ll be surprised at the kind of stuff that is out there, like did you hear about the jilted girlfriend who hired a hitman to kill her rival, and got all her info from MySpace? Or that phishing scams have now evolved to phone calls? Yeah, it’s scary. We love being on the cutting edge of technology, but we also need to protect what we’ve worked so hard for. Check them out, and if you have some suggestions, questions, or need more information on a particular topic, shoot me an email at techiedivas at yahoo dot com, or go to this form.

Rip YouTube Videos September 27, 2006
For those of you who have explored the world of YouTube, you know how strangely fascinating those random blips of people’s lives can be or just how joyful you feel after the shove down Memory Lane brought on by that obscure clip from your favorite childhood TV show (Muppet Show, anyone?). Do you ever think to yourself, “It sure would be nice to have this on my iPod to view later…” Well, look no further than TubeSock, a downloadable application with an oh-so-clever name that will convert your favorite YouTube videos and render them playable on your iPod, Mac, or PlayStation Portable. It’s simple and easy to use; just copy and paste the URL of your favorite clip into the application, convert and voila! Your video is available on your favorite portable device or if you don’t yet own a video iPod, save it onto your Mac for later viewing. Check website for more details.
Order Drinks Fast at the TechBar September 22, 2006
I find it interesting that a university in Europe has installed a touchscreen table-top computer system so kids get their drinks immediately. The order is sent to the bar staff, and to speed up the process even more, customers can even use a swipe card to pay. It’s actually a great idea, and I hope they implement it here soon. I hate waiting for a person to take down my order when I know what I want. Don’t you? I say skip all the formalities, get my food because I’m hungry, damit! The tech bar is more than a waiter, it also calls up a taxi for when you’ve had too much to drink, and you can even socialize with the guys at the other table. Let the table take care of you, you just worry about paying. I love it!
The Year of the Tablet PC September 22, 2006
